Stock CFDs vs Shares: What’s the Difference?
Buying a share means owning part of the underlying company. Trading a Stock CFD means taking a position on its price movement without owning the shares themselves.
While both provide exposure to movements in a company’s share price, there are some important differences:
- Ownership: Stock CFDs don’t give you ownership of the underlying shares or shareholder voting rights.
- Direction: CFDs allow you to go long or short depending on your market view.
- Leverage: Stock CFDs can be traded on margin, giving you greater market exposure with less capital while also increasing risk.
- Dividends: CFD traders don’t receive shareholder dividends, although dividend adjustments may apply to eligible positions.
Why Trade Stock CFDs?
A Stock CFD tracks movements in a company’s share price without giving you ownership of the underlying shares. This allows you to take a position based on whether you think the share price will rise or fall, while using margin to gain market exposure.
- Go long or short: Take a position based on where you think the price is heading, in either direction.
- Trade the price, not the share: Trade movements in the underlying share price without owning the shares themselves.
- Trade with leverage: Gain greater market exposure with less capital. Risk increases at the same time.
